Today is the celebration of Rhys' second birthday. There will be a trip to the fire station. There will also be ice cream, cake, and presents. When it's all over he will announce his daily retirement by taking a nap.
Two years…. I look at little baby boy Rhys and I still can't believe that he came out of my body.
A woman will never understand what it's like to have a child emerge from them in quite this way and then go on to become another living creature, in time.
Shortly after the precious dna which contained more than 3/4ths of the vital information that made Rhys possible left my body it went through a sort of incubation period inside of another, emerging to finally re-unite with me after 9 long months. 10 months, maybe. Maybe longer. Nobody was counting, and nobody knows what truly goes on once it enters the host parent. It is entirely lost to science at that point. The curtain comes down and there is no peeking behind it. It's the way that nature, and all of the gods, intended... from the very beginning of time.
It's all part of the tender miracle and mystery of fatherhood.
If only we had a way of examining the process more carefully, then we might be able to understand it just a little bit better.
